Welcome to Lent
Every year we observe the season of Lent in the weeks leading up to Easter- 40 days to prepare ourselves to commemorate Christ's crucifixion and resurrection. And, every year you hear me say that this is a perfect time to add or expand some spiritual disciplines (in fact, that's built right in to the Ash Wednesday liturgy). This year, we're following the Lectionary through the Gospel of John, so our focus on Sundays won't be spiritual disciplines, but they are still vitally important to our spiritual health, and an important part of Lent, so I'm using this opportunity to encourage us all (once again) to try a new one (or several)!
If you're not already reading your Bible regularly, consider trying that: you could read through the entire Gospel of John (where our sermons are coming from) in about half a chapter a day, or grab a copy of the Upper Room in the narthex to use. If you'd like to pray more, you could try following our weekly prayer focus, or ask to join our prayer chain. If you're interested in being more charitable, you can donate to our annual Toilet Paper drive and ongoing food collections. If you'd like to learn more about self-examination as a spiritual discipline, just ask me and I'd be glad to share two different exercises you could try.
Whatever spiritual disciplines you might be interested in, set aside a few minutes a day for the next several weeks to try it- I promise that your soul will thank you!
Blessings,
Pastor Nate
